Red Line

This is Bob Morzenti, Veteran Service Officer for Iron County, Wisconsin. I served in the United States Marine Corps from 1961 to 1965, and in the U. S. Air Force from 1966 to 1968. I did two tours of duty in Vietnam in Crash And Air/Sea Rescue Unit.

In July 1967 I was stationed in Danang Air Base. I was scheduled to leave for Tan Son Nhut on July 15th. Instead my relief came in a day early, so I flew out of Danang on the 14th July at 5:30 pm., 24 hours ahead of schedule.

Eleven hours later I received a call from a friend from my unit at Danang. He told me they had been hit by a rocket attack and that five airmen from my unit had been killed . Five airman that I had worked with every day. I had planned to meet one of the guys in Tan Son Nhut the following day. On Memorial Day and every day these are some of the memories that I have.

I would like to wish a safe and healthy Memorial Day to all the Veterans in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan and their families. If I could, I'd like to say to Airman 1st Class John Burg, Airman 2nd Class Charles Bos, Airman 2nd Class Charles Humble, Airman 1st Class Ronald Pool, and Airman 2nd Class Charles Ward, that I'm sorry. I wish that I would have stayed 11more hours, maybe I could have helped.
